French Onion Burger

🍔 Ingredients

For the Caramelized Onions

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tbsp unsalted butter

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tsp sugar (optional, for deeper caramelization)

¼ tsp salt

2 tbsp beef broth (or water) to deglaze

For the Burger Patties

1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for juicy burgers)

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp onion powder

½ tsp black pepper

½ tsp salt

For Assembly

4 brioche buns (toasted in butter)

4–6 slices Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)

2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)

1 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)

Fresh thyme leaves (optional, garnish)

🥘 Instructions

1. Caramelize the onions

1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter with olive oil.

2. Add sliced onions, salt, and sugar. Stir occasionally and cook slowly for 25–35 minutes until deep golden brown.

3. If onions start to dry or stick, splash with a little beef broth or water and stir. Remove from heat once jammy and caramelized.

2. Prepare the burger patties

1. In a bowl, mix ground beef with Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper — do not overmix.

2. Divide into 4 patties slightly larger than your buns (they shrink when cooking).

3. Cook the patties

1. Heat a grill pan or cast-iron skillet on medium-high.

2. Sear patties 3–4 min per side for medium, adding cheese slices in the last minute to melt. Cover pan briefly to help cheese melt.

4. Toast the buns

Spread butter on brioche buns and toast cut side down until golden.

5. Assemble

1. Spread mayo and Dijon on buns (optional but recommended).

2. Place cheesy beef patty on the bottom bun.

3. Top with a generous spoonful of caramelized onions.

4. Sprinkle thyme leaves for an herby aroma.

5. Cover with top bun and press lightly.
